Howard in the Real World
With all this talk about Howard, we thought it would be good to get somebody who knows him personally to speak on his behalf…We talk to Zanoply about their practice and their integration of Howard and other technologies into their workflow.
Who are Zanoply?
Zanoply is a London focused architectural practice whose core competency is to hand-craft planning applications for contentious residential developments. ‘Research is the key driver in all design decisions made,’ according to Lead Designer and Founder, Semsettin Karahan. ‘The first step is to conduct a feasibility report, prior to accepting any project, to ensure that we can deliver on our promises every time.’ Following this meticulous procedure has delivered an approval rate that stands at 99%.

This bespoke design approach does not, however, impede the efficiency of the overall operation, as Zanoply strive to employ the newest systems and technologies in their work. This efficiency, coupled with high quality solutions, has allowed Zanoply to forge strong relationships with their clients. They are now in the enviable position of having to turn customers away, requiring them to book one month in advance.
Urban Intelligence + Zanoply
The team at Zanoply were drawn to Urban Intelligence’s mission to merge several disciplines to revitalise stagnant industry processes. ‘An excellent complementary working-relationship has emerged between us,’ Semsettin acknowledged.
Zanoply signed on with Urban Intelligence 6 weeks ago, and, from early use, the team found it evident that the platform would neatly fit within their workflow. Semsettin enthusiastically describes Howard as a ‘Siri-esque consultant that has naturally become a member of our team. The eclectic resources available provide assistance before, and during, each project. This ensures that decisions are always supported with a good evidence base of planning policies.’
Zanoply integrated Howard into their workflow a week before submitting the pre-planning application on an exciting project to provide a sustainable lifetime home for an international property developer in the London Borough of Harrow. There were a number of hurdles to overcome on the project such as privacy, gross internal floor amount, over-shadowing and garden land-development restrictions. The team at Zanoply thrive in such a situation as they believe site constraints are a perfect reason to exercise creative-critical thinking.
By using 5 keyword searches we were able to instantly select the latest policies required to justify all key aspects of the design.
For this project, Howard allowed them to supplement all key design decisions with relevant supporting planning policies as evidence to address each site condition. ‘By using 5 keyword searches, we were able to instantly select the latest policies required to justify all key aspects of the design. This process reduced our production time by 20% due to ease of access and minimal document revisions.’ Semsettin goes on to say that ‘the design development became more natural because the required planning policies were on-demand at all times. We have already recommended Urban Intelligence to our community as I believe Howard should be an integral team member of any professional practice who prioritises delivering outstandingly consistent results for every project.’

Looking ahead, Zanoply are excited to use the interactive policy map of Greater London that Urban Intelligence have been developing: ‘This will create a seamless hub of planning policies for all boroughs within one page. It will create a coherent interface that can be simply digested for all users ranging from the first-time homeowner to the experienced consultant.’
Zanoply’s primary focus for the next 12 months is to seek and develop more innovative initiatives on behalf of their clients. Zanoply are currently in discussions with a Canadian start-up seeking to launch an innovative visualisation component for the architecture industry within the UK. This will be available in 2018 and will allow their team to demonstrate the software exclusively for their client’s projects. Beyond this, they may answer their clients’ calls to take projects into tender and offer project management services. We are excited for Zanoply’s continued success and to play our part in it with Howard.
